This is my Rio Negro, Colombian tank setup!

Today I’m going to go through my Colombian aquarium tank setup. Colombia is one of my favourite setups with the Peruvian tank setup. I hope you enjoy!

Symphysodon discusHeckel’s True Discus or Brown Discus” 20cm it originates from Rio Negro in Colombia, Venezuela & Brazil. The Crown Jewels in this setup! This Discus is really a beautiful cichlid with lots of red, especially from the Brazil locality, as you can see below. Keep them from eight individuals and up for their wellbeing. If you can’t house them in a 540 litres aquarium or larger and can not afford to by at least eight fishes, do not buy any! This is just a friendly advice, because you will hurt the fish and you will be sad when all are dead.

Wow! This is an amazing Discus species! My favourite next to the Green Discus, Symphysodon tarzoo, from Peru.

Andinoacara biseriatus 16cm (6,4 in) the “San-Juan cichlid” is a beautiful fish and not so common as it used to be. It is found in Colombia. Keep them in pairs. It’s a peaceful cichlid and goes well in this communal setting.

Andinoacara pulcher the “Blue Acara” 17cm (6,4 in) It originates in Trinidad, Northern Venezuela in Rio Orinoco and in Colombia. It’s a commonly seen cichlid in the trade and for obvious reasons. It is absolutely beautiful! And it is well mannered among the communal setup and like to show of itself to its owner. So this is a fish that you will see a lot of instead of hiding away like some fish tend to do. In my experience the also do well in a planted aquarium. I haven’t had any issues with it. I keep mine in two pairs. They tend to do better if you have more then just two individuals. They are very social.

Apistogramma viejita or A123 8cm (3,4 in) is found in Rio Meta in Colombia. It is one of the more red species of the genus. One of my favourite species of the genus and in my, MUST HAVE collection of Apistogrammas for sure. I’ve owned this fish in the past but I want them again. Unfortunately they where killed by other rivalries. If you’re going to house more then one species of Apistogramma, you need a large tank of at least 100cm long (40 in). Then you get the idea of volume needed. I’ve talked about A. viejita in my blog if you search back in the history, you will find it. It’s a true beauty! Judge for yourself. Should be kept in a harem with several females to one male.

Apistogramma D10 7cm (2,8 in) comes from Colombia and it’s a new species and as with the most Apistogramma species, it’s gorgeous! See for yourself. Keep them in a harem.

Cleithracara maronii 11cm the “Keyhole Cichlid” comes from Rio Maroni, hence the name, between French Guyana and Suriname, in the lower Rio Orinoco in eastern Colombia as well as Venezuela and maybe even in Trinidad. I find it to be a very cute cichlid and it is actually quite beautiful and it gets longer fins as an adult.

Herotilapia multispinosa the “Rainbow Cichlid” 12cm (4,8 in) has its habitat in Rio Negro, Colombia & Nicaragua, Honduras and Costa Rica. What a stunner in real life and a very underrated cichlid. It should be kept in several pairs.

Nannacara anomala know as the “Green or Golden Dwarf Cichlid” 8-10cm (3,3-4 in) its habitat is Rio Negro in Colombia. I own a pair of these, as they should be kept. A very beautiful dwarf cichlid.

Ivanacara adoketa the “Zebra Acara” 10cm (4 in) it inhabits Rio Negro in Colombia. I keep these in a pair. One of my all time favourite Acara cichlid. I mean, look at it! It’s GORGEOUS!

Geophagus winemelleri 30cm (12 in) is a RARE Geophagus in the hobby. It lives in waters as Rio Negro, Colombia, State of Amazonas, Southern Venezuela, Rio Orinoco, Northern Brazil and should be kept in a group of six minimum. Remember to have very fine grained sand for this species. It’s one of my favourites of the Geophagus genus!

Hyphessobrycon columbianusColombia Tetra” 6,5cm (2,6 in) and as the name suggests, it’s from Colombia. My favourite South American Tetra!

Paracheirodon axelrodiCardinal tetra” and Paracheirodon simulansGreen Neon Tetra” are both found in Rio Negro & Rio Orinoco. All Tetras needs to be housed as a minimum school of then fishes.

And to top it off, we need some stunning Plecos as well.

L-052 Dekeyseria sp. L52Colombian Butterfly Pleco” 14cm (5,6 in) it’s found in Rio Atabapo, Venezuela. Rio Orinoco and Colombia.

L-075 Ancistrus sabaji, Hemiancistrus sabaji, Peckoltia sabajiThe Para Pleco” 25cm (10 in) it can be found in Colombia, Guyana and Venezuela.

L-114 Pseudacanthicus cf. leopardusLeopard Cactus Pleco” 25cm (10 in) also from Rio Negro.
